Compatriots to be proud of. The DAMSS FIBERART! Part 1

Hi, all!

Finally back after a few months,
I am proud to introduce you an extraordinary couple of Italian textile artists: the DAMSS Fiberart

Daniela (chemical engineer) and Marco (architect) design and create together their quilts with energy and enthusiasm in their Laboratory in Milan. Monumental artworks, up to 13 mt in length.

"As a couple, our team works well together because each of us has aptitudes and knowledge that greatly complements one another skills. Our work’s main trends are in many ways connected to sculpture, architecture and perspective. We have been making 3-Dimentional creations using textile fibres resulting in clothing articles similar to totems or sculptures. (...)Other works are made by using a hand-loom which allows us to play with warp and weft so to create the most original fabric incorporating, for instance, macramé and other different patterns.Recently we took up landscaping and urban perspectives according to our respective engineering and architectural vocational training."

Who is a true artist?

The one who is able to shape both the materials and the conventional tools. One of Damss' trump card: their capability to modify their sewing machine foot according to their specific needs.

Now... Let's have a virtual tour throughout their artworks.

Ready... Set... Go!

Dome De Milan. Cm 160 x 160. A lovely view of the Dome of Milan, made with precious woolen fabrics coming from Italian Haute Couture. This artwork required several hours of machine free motion sewing and quilting with 12 and 28 wt Aurifil Makò Cotton and 12 wt Aurifil WoolTo give a lighter note, the DAMSS made an impressionist sky with shirting fabrics, pieced and sewn with different colors of 12wt Aurifil Makò Cotton.

Flowers. Cm 240 x 220. For this artwork, they used a yellow construction-grid to lighten up the vivid subject. To increase the texturing, they treated synthetics fabrics with their special method "hot textiles", then they pieced and sewed all together with strong Aurilux polyester threads, offered by Aurifil

NYC - La Nuit. Cm 160 x 160. Looks like a painting. Looks like a snapshot. Nope. It’s a new form of art. A deep portrait of the City par excellence - like you’ve never seen.
Rendering the light effect of the metropolis at night is extremely difficult. Marco and Daniela chose elegant fabrics coming from the Italian haute couture. They shaped, treated and processed the materials using their experimental techniques. Finally, they sealed and signed their artwork with Aurifil threads.

That's all for now! Stay tuned for Part 2

craftytammie: Blogger's Quilt Festival!

Craftytammie entered the Blogger's Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side with this cute creation - titled "Madrona Road challenge quilt".

"I stitched it with Aurifil thread in light gray, and quilted it myself with straight lines."

The whole world has a new Pope. (Welcome, Pope Francesco!)

Italy is going to have a new Government.

I could not be outdone.
I have a new smartphone!

And you know the funniest thing? I've received it as gift.
Absolutely unexpected.

This made my (Mon)day!

Hi, all! A new week has just started.

Monday, such an exhausting day.
But... to be honest, I could not have started any better than this!

I've received a LOVE(l)ly unexpected gift from an Italian quilter, teacher, artist, eclectic - the sweet Roberta Sperandio from Simplyninepatch

A dedication and - above all - "ELLY" embroidered in red Aurifil thread below the biggest heart... wow!

What an honor, and how wonderful! Thank you so much!

Yes, this made my (Mon)day!

If you want to learn more about Roberta, you can visit her Blog, or join her FB Page
In addition, you can find a few free patterns of her pillows here.

Cheers,
ELLY

Plastic canvas: tested!

Hi, all!
As anticipated, I have (finally!) tried the so called "plastic canvas"!
I've purchased them online, 6 sheets more or less.

Since I have received many compliments for my Snoopy, I decided to propose it again!

Do you notice anything familiar in this pic?
My super loyal companion through this "adventure", Aurifil Floss!

I must admit it is a bit 'hard to stitch on plastic canvas!
If you need to hurry and stitch quickly... Give up, believe me. Sore fingers and high probability to break 1 or more needles.

BUT if you have the calm, the patience and, above all, the time... The result is very particular and appreciable.
This is just a rigid bookmark, but I've seen on the Internet a wide variety of gadgets like key chains, earrings, pendants, etc...
And wow! The plastic canvas actually allow you to realize "3D embroidery"!

This is not finished yet, maybe I will end it tonight - once I'll be back from the gym!

Have a nice day!
And - above all - remember,
tomorrow TGIF!

The work goes to swollen sails!

Hello, folks!
Below you will find the pictures of my latest "new entries".

Which do you love the most, Snoopy or the little bear?

It does not end here!
I am currently testing the so called plastic canvas, it's a bit hard to embroider on them but I'm really curios to see the result!

Work in progress!

If you were a child,
what would be your favorite bookmark among these three?

I'm going on with my cross stitched gifts, choosing the easiest themes so that I can realize many in little time! About 60 babies, wow, I am around the 5% of the "work" at the moment!
(Work? No... That's a hobby and a pleasure!)

I'm quite confident I'll content everyone!

Regarding the "Bunnies in love", I've partially copied a pattern and partially invented the background of my own. I've used Aurifloss, Aurifil 12 Wool (the yellow thread on the left ribbon), Aurifil 12 wt Makò Cotton (the Fuchsia) and Aurifil 28 wt Makò Cotton (the beautiful variegated thread you see on the frame).

"Hello Kitty" is all done with Aurifloss, except the frame that is stitched with Aurifil fuchsia 12 wt Makò Cotton.

Work in progress!
ELLY
